Simple procedures are the most effective: Latus
Complex workplace procedures are likely to be ignored, Latus Business Solutions says.

Transport operators should ditch complex workplace procedures in favour of simple and clear measures that are easy to understand, a leading risk advisory firm says.

Latus Business Solutions has highlighted the need for change following a recent survey of West Australian transport operators.

Latus managing director Mike Wood says of the 2,500 transport operators in the State surveyed, only 1 per cent reported they had a formal industry qualification.

"Couple that with a growing trend of reduced literacy in the workforce and a complex procedure will not even be looked at, let alone read and understood," he says.

Wood says it is important companies keep procedures simple and specific, while also training employees.

"During recent audits we have seen companies spend inordinate amounts of money on procedure generation that are fantastically laid out with colour and clause numbers and cross references to other aspects of law," he says.

"The big and most common problem is that they are not really a procedure/recipe but more a statement of who is responsible for what and read like a very detailed insurance policy.

"These procedures really need to expand upon who is responsible and explain how they will achieve the required result."
