ATA appoints new chair of safety committee

Tim Knowles from Queensland’s Speedie Contractors takes over from the retiring Mark Sullivan

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has appointed Queensland operator Tim Knowles to chair its national safety committee.

Knowles is a director and the operations manager of Speedie Contractors in Brisbane, which operates more than 30 rigids and prime movers in road surfacing.

He has been a director of the ATA since last year; a board member of the Queensland Trucking Association for 15 years and its president from 2005 to 2007; and he was a driver with Speedie from 1975 to 1992.

Knowles says one of his goals as chair of the ATA Safety Committee will be to press for improvements in truck maintenance.

“Because of my background in the dangerous goods sector, I’m also keen to see more work done on preventing rollovers and pushing for mandatory electronic stability control,” he says.

Knowles’ appointment follows the retirement of outgoing committee chair Mark Sullivan.

“I want to build on the safety gains that the ATA achieved under Mark’s leadership of the committee,” he says.

The ATA Safety Committee provides the ATA General Council with safety advice and assists it with developing industry policy.
