VicRoads in EBS call after logging industry success

Victorian regulator wants anti-rollover technology in place in other sectors

VicRoads is calling on the livestock and dangerous goods industries to implement electronic braking systems (EBS) following the success of the technology in the logging industry.

The number of rollovers at State-owned timber company VicForests is down to zero from 40 following the introduction of EBS in 2010, the firm says.

Whilst the number of truck rollovers in Victoria is down to 41 last year from 53 the year before, more needs to be done to continue the trend and VicRoads believes the technology is the way forward.

“This new technology removes operator error and works when it senses the heavy vehicle to be out of control, such as locked up wheels or wheels in the air,” Regulatory Services Director Richard Bell says.

“The success of this technology is now being spread amongst the wider heavy vehicle industry and being embraced.

“We see this technology as a strong option moving forward to minimise rollovers by heavy vehicles.”

VicForests has mandated EBS on all contractors’ trucks due to a high rate in the industry.

The VicRoads Heavy Vehicle Rollover Prevention Program, which is delivered via training sessions using scale truck models and rollover incident videos, has been well received by the industry, Bell says.

“The program focuses on the fact that everyone in the industry has a responsibility to facilitate behaviour change which leads to the reduction of crash risks,” he adds.

“Companies completing the program have noted how this interactive method is a great way to convey program messages not only to drivers but to everyone involved in the chain of responsibility.

“The transference of knowledge in a training session is made easier by the use of scale truck models and video footage specific to the transport task of the audience.”

The program is available in a packaged eight-part series that is ideal for training, toolbox sessions and refreshers.

Specialised videos that are created by Training Snippets use realistic modes to demonstrate scientific explanations.
