Merritt to take VicRoads leadership role

Former CEO LIddle moves to new planning and transport department

John Merritt is VicRoads’ new CEO.

He replaces Gary Liddle who was this year chosen to lead a new Victorian planning and transport department.

Merritt, who was the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) CEO for four years, will start his new role on May 5.

Liddle was one of five executives selected in January to drive the merged Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure (DTPLI) as Deputy Secretary for Transport.

He was with VicRoads for almost seven years.

DTPLI Secretary Dean Yates says Merritt has a wealth of executive experience in government, not-for-profit and private organisations.

“Prior to EPA, John was Executive Director at WorkSafe and he also served as the CEO of the National Safety Council,” Yates says.

“He has extensive experience within the public sector and a proven track record of working collaboratively with stakeholders, business and the broader community.

“His experience and knowledge will be a great asset to the fantastic team at VicRoads.

“With significant road projects and safety initiatives underway, it’s an exciting time to be joining VicRoads and I’m sure John will be looking forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
