National Road Transport Hall of Fame alumni and one-time Truck Driver of the Year Frank Marchetti has passed away.

Marchetti, with brothers John and Albert, arrived in Australia penniless in 1950 and, by 1952, had founded timber transporter Marchetti Transport in north-eastern Victoria.

He later expanded his business to include interstate transport and logistics.

By the time Wettenhalls Group bought Marchetti Transport, which went into administration in 2008 due to surging fuel prices and other costs, its reach extended to NSW, Queensland and South Australia.

"He came to Australia from France with absolutely nothing and built a business that at its peak had over a 100 employees and millions of dollars of trucks, he was also voted truck driver of the year in 1966," son Derek Marchetti says.

"He started in Australia with absolutely nothing and finished being friends of Members of Parliament, Victorian Premiers and having occasional meetings with the Prime Minister as well as having a large and happy family."

Frank Marchetti’s Hall of Fame citation says he won the driver award "based on efficiency and driver-customer relationships, as well as his driving skill".

This attention to customers came with the expansion.

"He was known for his service to customers and the fastidious condition he kept his trucks in, he had his own service department as part of the operation and would spend a lot of his time even in his later years interested in the servicing of his trucks," Derek Marchetti says.

His passing comes at as the broader industry has lost other stalwarts, including Secon Freight Logistics CEO Terry Considine and recently trailing equipment innovator Ken Baldock.

Marchetti‘s funeral service will be held at Boyd Chapel, Springvale Botanical Cemetery, 2.30pm Monday, March 3.
