TWU adds Butler to list of RSRT supporters

Federal Labor’s candidate for former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s seat of Griffith in Queensland has pledged her support for the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal (RSRT).
Terri Butler, who is challenging the Liberal-National Party’s (LNP) Bill Glasson for the seat in the February 8 by-election, made the pledge at a barbecue organised by the Transport Workers Union (TWU).
The TWU has travelled the countryside seeking political support for the tribunal, which is currently under review to determine if it is effective at improving road safety.
"Safe rates is important to the people of Griffith because it means drivers can afford to properly maintain their vehicles, can drive safely without having to meet impossible deadlines, and can earn a fair wage that allows them to put food on the family table," Butler says.
TWU Queensland State Secretary Peter Biagini, who attended the barbecue, says the RSRT is necessary to address heavy vehicle safety.
"Hundreds of people die in truck crashes each year on Australian roads, devastating families and communities in Queensland and across the country," Biagini says.
"Safe rates through the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal will remove the economic pressures major companies put on drivers to skip breaks, delay maintenance and work faster and longer to deliver their goods."
