Dates announced for consultation forums

Trucking operators can now register to attend public forums beginning next month to discuss proposed changes to heavy vehicle charges

February 26, 2013

The dates for consultation forums on a discussion paper outlining proposed changes to heavy vehicle charges have been announced.

The National Transport Commission (NTC) will begin staging forums across the country from March 8, a week after the discussion paper is released.

Events will be held in Launceston, Darwin, Perth and Port Hedland in early March, with the forums then shifting to Bunbury, Port Lincoln, Adelaide and Mt Gambier in the middle of the month.

The NTC will also hold forums in Melbourne, Dubbo, Canberra, Sydney and Albury/Wodonga from March 20 to 27.

The dates for the Townsville and Brisbane forums have not been finalised.

Those interested in attending the events need to register. The NTC will also set aside one month for feedback on the discussion paper, with the deadline closing on April 2.

The discussion paper will look at the effectiveness of the existing charging framework and recommend improvements that can be made to it.

Governments have also asked the NTC to develop a new charging system that will take effect on July 1, 2014. The current scheme has been in place since 2007 and has been subject to criticism that it relies on outdated figures to set charges.
