K&S Freighters’ expansion into Western Australia is continuing apace, with the firm taking over Bunbury-based Collare Transport.

The takeover is expected to be completed by October 31 and follows the purchase of WA-based Regal Transport and Pacific Transport in 2010.

Collare Transport has a strong focus on the timber industry in WA, and K&S hopes the business will augment its Dardanup operation formerly known as Brookes Transport.

"The acquisition presents an excellent opportunity to generate operational synergies and to improve the returns of the combined Dardanup and Collare
businesses," K&S Managing Director Greg Stevenson says.

In a statement released today, K&S says Collare Transport has a complementary customer profile, lane mix, and equipment base to the Dardanup operation.

Collare Transport has annual revenues of about $12 million and employs 35 people. Stevenson has not detailed how much K&S bought Collare Transport for, but says it was "a comparatively modest outlay".

K&S expects Collare Transport to deliver immediate returns, adding that the purchase follows significant growth over the past three years in K&S’ WA operations which underpinned solid earnings growth for the group in the past financial year.

K&S in August announced a $16.4 million net profit for the 2011-12 financial year, with the result due in large part to its WA operations.

Regal Transport’s bottom line grew more than $1 million to $4.6 million. Stevenson announced at the time he expected the business to keep growing in the year ahead.

The company also stated a desire to acquire new businesses to expand its operations throughout Australia.

Regal Transport offers heavy haulage and freight services to the likes of HWE Mining, Mount Gibson Mining, OneSteel, Bunnings and Coca Cola. Pacific Transport focuses on the Perth to Broome and Derby regions, and K&S is using it to target the resources and oil and gas sectors.
