Motoring group wants government to reactivate speed cameras on the Westgate Bridge in Melbourne or remove them

Victorian motoring group RACV is calling on the state’s government to make up its mind about speeding cameras that have been out of operation for the past six years on Melbourne’s Westgate Bridge.
The cameras were quietly switched off and the RACV’s General Manager Brian Negus wants them either restored or removed. He says the bridge needs them as the location is dangerous.
“This is a quite vulnerable location. There’s in excess 160,000 vehicles a day using Westgate Bridge,” Negus says.
“It’s now five lanes each way with a tight cross-section and it is therefore a potentially dangerous location and certainly a location where you don’t want drivers exceeding the speed limit.”
He says the cameras were switched off because they could not cope with the vibration of the bridge and strong winds.
“It was reportedly shut down because the technology was not adequate to achieve the accurate readings.
“If the technology can be fixed, I think it’s better they reinstate it.”
