Move to Hastings necessary to reduce congestion

Hastings MP Neale Burgess believes more needs to be done to relieve congestion around the Port of Melbourne

Victorian State Member for Hastings Neale Burgess believes more needs to be done to relieve congestion around the Port of Melbourne.

Burgess says the port has not reached its full capacity due to truck congestion, with channel deepening doing nothing to resolve the problem.

“Channel deepening does absolutely zero for the road around the Port of Melbourne or the number of trucks on the roads,” Burgess says.

“There needs to be a diversification to enable Victoria to deal with that growth and the plan is to use the Port of Hastings.”

The Coalition MP accused the Opposition of going “weak at the knees” for not moving some of the port activity to Hastings when it was in power.

“And why would you think that would happen with a Labor government? Would be it about the unions telling Labor government members they were not allowed to do it?” he says.

“I think it would be for that reason.”
