International express provider DHL Express has announced plans to construct a new purpose- built $15 million facility that includes a processing gateway and offices at Brisbane Airport.
The new facility will be developed by Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) and is a part of DHL’s 10-year strategic initiative to invest in growth in Brisbane.
DHL has entered into a 10-year lease with options with BAC for this facility, which will be located at the airport’s Da Vinci Precinct.
The processing gateway will include high-speed re-weigh technology that will improve outbound processing between 10 and 15 percent.
Within the facility, there will be offices that will house more than100 DHL personnel covering operations, sales, customs brokerage, gateway export and import, with sufficient capacity to accommodate future growth.
Gary Edstein, DHL Express, Senior Vice President Oceania, says the new facilities and the company’s strategic focus on Brisbane are in response to significant growth in its international business in the region.
Despite Queensland’s exporters forecasting the lowest increase in export orders in DHL’s 2011 Export Barometer (39 percent), the company remains positive on the State’s outlook for 2012.
“Despite Queensland’s flood-hit economy and continued global uncertainty, we have seen business in Brisbane grow by over 25 percent in the past year. This has been driven by an increase in consumer shipments – propelled by the continued expansion of online retailing and mining,” he says.
“Businesses in Brisbane are dynamic, varying from farming to fashion. Coupled with Brisbane’s potential as a gateway to assist with the growth in Papua New Guinea and our strong relationships with Brisbane Airport Corporation, we are looking forward to the years ahead with great confidence for the region.”
DHL kicked off its investment in Brisbane last year when its national customer service centre was relocated to a refurbished office in Roma Street, Brisbane. With the customer service centre now officially opened and construction due to commence on the airport facilities in the next month, DHL will turn its attention to the next phase of its 10-year strategic initiative as it continues to facilitate business growth in Brisbane.
