Weight restrictions have been lifted on a flood-damaged bridge in south-west Queensland in a welcome move for trucks in the region.
Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace says inspections and load testing on the Maranoa River Bridge have confirmed the structure is safe.
The government earlier this month imposed a five tonne load limit for vehicles travelling between Roma and Mitchell after the bridge sustained structural damage from debris.
“The bridge is a critical link to Mitchell and to further western communities and the lifting of weight restrictions is welcome news after this month’s flooding,” Wallace says.
“It means freight and livestock transport weighing more than 42.5 tonnes will now have access to and from western Queensland.”
However, Wallace adds that a 20km/h speed limit with single-lane access will remain, along with a maximum 3.5 metre width restriction.
“The bridge sustained considerable structural damage with the force of the floodwaters causing damage to the top of the bridge, demolishing bridge railings and leaving large trees and debris piled against the deck,” he says.
“Our main priority continues to be the safety of all road users and work will continue to ensure the bridge is safe to use while long-term repairs are being completed.
