Truckie ejected as rig jack-knifes

Truckie airlifted to hospital after being ejected from his cabin in a serious crash with another truck

February 9, 2012

A truck driver was ejected from the cabin of his vehicle and a large number of cattle were killed in a serious crash yesterday on the Newell Highway in NSW.

Emergency services and police were called about 6:45pm to the highway 5km north of Dubbo in the state’s central west following reports of an incident involving two trucks.

Police are still investigating the matter, but believe one truck jack-knifed on the highway due to the incident, causing the driver to be ejected.

“The other truck, which was carrying a large number of cattle, left the highway, crashed into a tree, and rolled onto its side. The driver of the first truck was taken by ambulance to Dubbo before being airlifted to Sydney with substantial injuries,” a statement from police says.

“The driver of the second truck suffered only minor injuries; however, a large number of the cattle on the truck died at the scene.”

NSW Police has not given a firm time as to when the section of the highway will reopen, but expect it to be closed until sometime this afternoon.

“Heavy vehicles are diverted in both directions via the Golden Highway to Dunedoo, then Castlereagh Highway to Gilgandra,” NSW Police says.

“Light vehicles are being diverted in both directions via Mendooran Road to Mendooran, where they use the Castlereagh Highway to rejoin the Newell Highway at Gilgandra.”
