Former judge to keep eye on speed cameras

Former judge handed the job of investigating Victoria’s speed camera system to ensure it remains transparent and accountable

February 7, 2011

Victoria’s first independent road safety commissioner will start today in a bid to maintain transparency surrounding speed cameras.

Former County Court Judge Gordon Lewis AM will be providing independent oversight of Victoria’s road safety camera system.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Peter Ryan says the role marks the Victorian Government’s efforts to provide greater public accountability around the state’s camera system.

The Auditor-General recently handed down a report that found speed and red-light cameras were focused on safety and were not revenue raisers.

Ryan says the commissioner will ensure motorists have an independent avenue to check the validity of the state’s camera system.

Lewis will have the power to review and investigate any aspect of the camera system and make recommendations to government based on his investigations.

“The commissioner will report to Parliament on an annual basis and his findings will also help to inform the Coalition Government’s road safety strategy,” Ryan says.

In addition to being a former member of the County Court, Lewis has extensive experience working across government. He oversaw the review of integrity assurances in the Victorian racing industry.

Lewis will be able to establish a reference group of external advisors to assist him in his investigations.
