WA black spot receives cash injection

Tonkin Highway receives $3 million cash injection to fix a stretch of dangerous road responsible for multiple crashes

December 8, 2011

The Tonkin Highway in Western Australia will receive a $3 million cash injection to fix a dangerous stretch of road responsible for multiple crashes.

The money will be spent on a major upgrade of the Tonkin Highway-Morley Drive intersection about 20 minutes north of the Perth CBD after the route was identified as one of the top 20 metropolitan crash sites.

Transport Minister Troy Buswell says more than 150 crashes were recorded at the intersection between January 2006 and December 2010. He says the majority of incidents were rear-end crashes.

“This $3 million upgrade should reduce the number of rear end crashes at the intersection, improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, improve safety for vehicles making left turns and improve the turning angles for heavy vehicles and trucks,” he says.

“This work will significantly benefit the high number of cars travelling along Tonkin Highway, which is also an important link in the freight network.”

Upgrade works will include a reconfiguration of all approaches to the intersection and the general layout of the road network, including kerb lines, medians and splitter islands to improve alignment and traffic flow safety.

New overhead traffic signals will be installed on the highway and Morley Drive to improve driver visibility to the traffic signals.

Drainage and street lighting will also be upgraded. Buswell says the upgrades will be done at night to ensure traffic is not disrupted during business hours.
