Upgrade back on track after early year deluge

Albanese banks on a $12 million upgrade to the Bruce Highway to be completed by the end of the year

December 8, 2011

Most of a $12 million upgrade to the Bruce Highway north of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast is expected to be completed by Christmas.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese says the first stage of the reconstruction of the highway through the Wide Bay township of Tiaro is on track to be largely finished in the coming weeks and fully completed by the end of 2012.

Albanese says workers are making good progress in the wake of the floods that crippled large parts of Queensland’s road network in January this year.

The highway will be widened to 11 metres beween the town’s truck stop area and Mungar Road and workers will replace the drainage culverts beneath it.

“Once this work is completed, the 9200 motorists and truck drivers which use this section of the Bruce each day can expect safer, smoother driving conditions,” Albanese says.

Queensland Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace says the existing route will also be strengthened and a number of dedicate right-turn lanes will be installed.

“Weather permitting, the majority of this work on the first stage will be finished by Christmas, with work crews returning in the New Year to complete the resurfacing,” he says.

Temporary speed limit reductions have been imposed on motorists passing through the area and Wallace has urged road users to slow down and obey the signs.
