Truck drivers crossing into South Australia will soon be given a new rest area to use

Truck drivers crossing from Victoria to South Australia will soon have a new place to pull over, with work on a multi-million dollar rest area to be completed next year.
The federal and South Australian governments have poured $6.3 million into the Yamba rest area, which is due to be completed in early 2012.
An old quarantine station will be demolished to pave the way for final work on the new facility, along with the construction of a weigh bridge.
A new quarantine station aimed at protecting South Australia’s citrus industry will open this week to replace the current facility.
“The completion of this new building means the existing quarantine facility can be demolished and new truck rest area facilities and a weigh bridge can be completed,” Federal Minister Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese says.
South Australia Transport Minister Patrick Conlon says the new rest area will address driver fatigue and improve safety.
“This ‘one-stop-shop’ is a major safety initiative in addressing fatigue issues and ensuring truck loading and operational safety, as well as protecting South Australia from produce-attacking pests that South Australia remains free from,” Conlon says.
