November 15, 2011

QR National has signed a new long-term contract with Wesfarmers to haul coal from its Curragh mine to the new Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal in North Queensland.

QR will haul up to 1.5 million tonnes annually as part of the deal. It adds to an existing contract it has with Wesfarmers to carry up to 8.5 million tonnes per annum from Curragh to RG Tanna Coal Terminal and Barney Point Coal Terminal.

The contract is the second secured by QR National for the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal, which is due to begin operations in 2014. The rail operator inked a deal with Aquila Washpool to carry 1.6 million tonnes of coal annually.

QR says the Wiggins Island deal means from mid-2014 it will be contracted to haul up to 10 million tonnes of coal annually from the expanded Curragh mine to ports near Gladstone.

QR National Managing Director and CEO Lance Hockridge says the company is pleased to continue its relationship with Wesfarmers as it expands its footprint in Queensland.

"QR National is absolutely committed to delivering a high level of customer service to Wesfarmers, with a strong focus on performance, reliability and safety," he says.
