Major works on the upgrade of the Pacific Highway south of Grafton are complete, with the section of road expected to open by the end of the month.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese says finishing touches are being applied to the section of road at Glenugie, bringing an end to almost two years of work.
Albanese says the $60 million jointly-funded upgrade will deliver duplicated road along 7km of the highway.
NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay says the ongoing duplication of the highway will deliver better and safer driving conditions and lift its capacity to carry the growing freight volumes being transported along it.
“This task has been given even greater urgency by the fact that interstate freight between Sydney and Brisbane is predicted to almost triple by 2029, with 80 percent of this growth destined to be carried by trucks using the Pacific Highway,” Gay says.
“In partnership with the Federal Government, we’re determined to get the job done as quickly as possible. Already the full duplication of the highway is the largest road construction project underway anywhere in the nation, with more than 1000 workers currently on site upgrading some 69km of road.”
