Residents demand action on WestLink
Petition containing almost 1400 signatures was presented to Victorian Parliament this week calling on funding to build WestLink
September 16, 2011A petition containing almost 1400 signatures was presented to Victorian Parliament this week calling on funding to build WestLink.
Williamstown MP Wade Noonan, acting on behalf of the residents, says the petition is a clear demonstration from local residents that they support the WestLink project and want the Baillieu Government to construct a West Gate alternative.
"There is no way the western suburbs of Melbourne can support a growing population without an alternative to the West Gate Bridge," Noonan says.
"It’s not just population growth driving demand for a second major river crossing, freight volumes are growing rapidly too, as evidenced by the 7 percent growth in shipping containers through the Port of Melbourne over the last 12 months."
"The previous state Labor government announced that it would build WestLink but the Baillieu Government has shifted the project into reverse, sending it off for a review."
Noonan believes the project will help drive urban renewal and create more jobs and opportunities in the region.
"More than 1250 local residents have made it absolutely clear that they want an alternative to the West Gate Bridge and as their local Member for Parliament I intend to carry their voices into the Victorian Parliament and advocate strongly for this vital project."
