Minister praises industry for putting focus on people at Freight Week, saying investment in training is essential to maintain competitiveness

Victoria’s Higher Education and Skills Minister, Peter Hall, has praised the Freight Week organisers for focusing on people, saying investment in training is vital to remaining competitive.
Hall spoke during the Freight People Day in Melbourne and told attendees he was pleased the major focus of this year’s event was on people and skills.
“I commend the transport sector for setting an example for industry by stepping up and playing a much greater role in training. If Victoria’s economy is to remain competitive it is important that we invest in our most important asset, our people,” Hall says.
“Without a highly skilled workforce, any industry will struggle to remain productive and competitive. The transport sector clearly recognises this and I congratulate them for taking the time to put this important issue at the top of the agenda.”
During his speech, Hall highlighted a $2.1 billion government investment in vocational education and training and the reintroduction of concession fee places for TAFE students aged 15 to 24 holding a health care card.
“This investment is crucial in ensuring Victoria remains competitive and continues to attract industry investment,” he says.
“We are also committed to ensuring that Victoria’s training system is accessible and affordable for all Victorians so that everyone has the opportunity to gain a qualification and continue learning throughout their life.”
Hall says the annual Freight Week event, which is now in its 22nd year, is vital in helping employers understand the benefit of investing in people and engaging with training providers.
