More police will hit the road for NSW long weekend, handing out double demerit points for speeding and restraint offences

Extra police officers will be on the beat in NSW from September 30 to October 3, handing out double demerit points to motorists flouting road laws.
The four-day Operation Slowdown will begin tomorrow and run over the state’s Labour Day weekend, with officers targeting major freeways and motorways and the Golden, Great Western, Hume, New England, Princes, Pacific and Sturt highways.
Assistant Commissioner John Hartley says Operation Slowdown aims to reduce road trauma and has issued a blunt message to motorists: “Those who break the law will be caught.”
“This operation is about catching those motorists who not only put themselves at risk but endanger the lives of other innocent road users,” he says.
“There will be increased traffic on many of our major roads this long weekend and the highly-visible police presence will hopefully discourage motorists from breaking the law.
Police last year caught more than 4000 motorists speeding, while 300 others were charged with drink driving.
