Ombudsman targets businesses on the hunt for new staff to ensure their record-keeping standards are up to scratch

Tasmanian businesses on the hunt for new staff might soon receive an educational visit from the workplace watchdog.
The Fair Work Ombudsman says it will begin an educational campaign this month targeting 100 businesses which have recently advertised for new employees.
It says the visits are aimed at helping employers understand national workplace laws, such as ensuring fresh workers are paid the correct wage.
“Throughout August, Fair Work inspectors will be contacting up to 100 employers who have recently advertised in local newspapers for new staff to provide them with information and advice about their obligations,” Fair Work Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson says.
“A lack of diligent record-keeping at the time of recruitment can result in confusion between employers and their staff and increase the likelihood of employees making complaints.”
Wilson says inspectors will conduct follow-up visits in October to check payslips to ensure employers are compliant.
