A roundabout in Melbourne known for its poor safety record has received a $2.34 million upgrade to reduce the number of crashes.
The junction of Flemington Road, Royal Parade, Elizabeth Street and Peel Street, which is also known as the Haymarket roundabout, had its traffic lights officially switched on today.
The upgrade also involved a pedestrian crossing and bicycle lanes.
There have been 78 recorded crashes at the location, including 14 serious injury crashes, since 2000.
Victorian Transport Minister Terry Mulder says the intersection, which once was confusing and very complex, had eight vehicle exit and entry points and trams entering from three points.
“Many drivers have experienced a dangerous situation or a near miss with another vehicle at this roundabout,” Mulder says.
“The $2.34 million worth of works will regulate traffic flow and address the causes of crashes.”
The upgrades will provide a controlled environment for vehicles, trams, bicycles and pedestrians passing through the roundabout, he says.
