Sydney businesses in Fair Work's sights


The Fair Work Ombudsman will visit more than 200 businesses in and around Sydney over the next four months

The Fair Work Ombudsman will make educational visits to more than 200 businesses in and around Sydney over the next four months.

Inspectors will begin a four-month campaign targeting 150 businesses in Sydney’s northern suburbs to provide advice on the national workplace relations system.

The ombudsman says inspectors will hand out information packs to employers previously covered under the NSW industrial relations system but who are now bound by the national model.

Between August and December, inspectors will visit employers in Avalon, Curl Curl, Harbord, Lane Cove, Mona Vale, Palm Beach, Warriewood and Whale Beach.

Inspectors will also visit 30 employers in the Sydney inner suburb of Haberfield next month and another 30 in Erskineville and St Peters in September.

Fair Work Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson says the informal visits will assist employers to understand national workplace laws, including the national employment standards and Modern Awards.

"Information packs being distributed include helpful resources such as fact sheets, templates and best practice guides providing advice on practical steps employers can take to adjust to the federal system," he says.

"We are very serious about our job of building knowledge and creating fairer workplaces and we are strongly focused on ensuring the community understands its workplace rights and obligations."
