Work to begin to fix high-risk section of Hume Highway where five people have been killed

Victoria’s Hume Highway in Kalkallo is set to improve as works worth $4.65 million have started.
Nine km of safety barriers will be installed in the high-risk area. Victorian Roads Minister Terry Mulder says safety barriers and guard fencing will better protect motorists from impacts with roadside hazards such as trees and power poles.
“Over the past decade, there have been 153 crashes along the Hume Highway from Aitken Creek, Craigieburn, to Gunn’s Gully Road, including 77 serious injury crashes, 71 other injury crashes and five fatalities,” he says.
“Of these crashes, 49 were run-off-road crashes resulting in 30 serous injury crashes, 17 other injury crashes and two fatalities.”
The project, delivered by VicRoads, also includes shoulder sealing and the installation of guard fencing along the stretch of the road to improve safety.
“The Coalition Government is committed to improving road safety and the installation of these crash treatments will benefit drivers on the Hume Highway,” Mulder says.
