June 23, 2011
Police have recovered the body of a truck driver whose semi-trailer ploughed through a metal barrier on the Pacific Highway and landed in a dam.
NSW Police received calls from motorists about 5:30am today reporting the incident near Bulahdelah, which is just over an hour north of Newcastle.
In a statement, NSW Police says the truck’s cabin was almost submerged when officers arrived. Divers had to be called in and the body was recovered just after 11am.
“The body, believed to a man aged in his mid 40s, has been recovered and taken for a post mortem examination,” the statement says.
“Investigators remain at the scene and they will prepare a report for the Coroner.”
A salvage operation will begin today to remove the truck from the dam, with NSW Police saying a contra-flow will be put in place on the highway.
A contra-flow will be put in place once the salvage operation gets underway.
