Work starts on Holbrook Bypass to remove trucks from local streets and improve safety and travel times

Work has started on the Holbrook Bypass on the Hume Highway in NSW to take trucks off local streets and improve safety and travel times.
The bypass is the final section of the highway upgrade and is due to be completed in mid 2013.
Once it opens, federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese says there will for the first time be a four lane divided highway running all the way from Sydney to Melbourne.
Albanese says the $247 million bypass will mean up to 2,700 trucks will no longer need to travel on local roads each day.
Albury MP Greg Aplin says the 9.5km bypass will provide easy entry and exit to the north and south of the town as well as twin bridges over Culcairn Road and Ten Mile Creek.
“This new bypass will improve safety for local residents by reducing the number of cars and trucks on Holbrook’s local streets,” Aplin says.
“The Woomargama and Tarcutta bypasses, which are fully funded by the Federal Government, are currently being built and are due to open to traffic by the end of 2011.”
The Federal Government is providing $220 million to build the Holbrook Bypass, with NSW contributing $27 million.
