Albanese shortlists two construction firms to upgrade the Bruce Highway through Cairns' southern suburbs

Two construction companies have been shortlisted by the Federal Government to upgrade the Bruce Highway through Cairns’ southern suburbs.
BMD/Albem/SMEC and Abigroup/AECOM are through to the next stage of the selection process, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese says.
“The short-listing of these two consortiums was yet another major milestone in the delivery of this long overdue upgrade,” Albanese says.
“After a further detailed assessment process, which will include both parties undertaking preliminary planning and design work, the final contract will be awarded later this year with the construction expected to start in 2012.”
Albanese says the project will realign and widen the Bruce Highway between Ray Jones Drive and Sheehy Road.
Once completed in 2013, he says the upgrade will ease congestion and reduce travel times for the 550,000 motorists using the stretch of road.
Albanese says the Federal Government is investing $8.3 billion in Queensland’s roads and rail infrastructure as part of its Nation Building Program.
