ATA to fund safety research project

ATA to fund truck and trailer research projects as part of commitment to UN Decade of Action for Road Safety

May 11, 2011

The Australian Trucking Association has commissioned a heavy vehicle safety research program in support of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety.

Launched worldwide today, the Decade of Action aims to stabilise and then reduce road crash fatalities across the globe.

While saying the trucking industry has made strong gains in safety improvements over the last 20 years, ATA CEO Stuart St Clair says more can be done.

He says the Centre for Automotive Safety Research at the University of Adelaide has been tasked with preparing an overview report into heavy vehicle safety.

“We need to keep improving the industry’s safety, but governments and businesses need to base their safety decisions on evidence and a clear understanding of the costs and benefits of possible safety measures,” he says.

The report will compare safety measures and provide evidence about those that work and will look at how to make heavy vehicles safer.

The ATA says the centre will recommend priorities for follow-up research and provide a reference guide on existing research on truck and trailer safety.

“The results of the project will help guide the direction of the ATA’s future safety research,” St Clair says.

Road safety expert Dr Jeremy Woolley will lead the team preparing the report. Woolley, who is a member of the South Australian Road Safety Advisory Council, has researched speed limits, drink driving enforcement and road safety advertising campaigns.
