Monaro hwy duplication begins

Work begins on the only remaining unduplicated section of the Monaro Highway

April 13, 2011

Work has started on the only remaining unduplicated section of the Monaro Highway to upgrade the route to four lanes.

ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has turned the first sod on the $20 million upgrade between Canberra Avenue and Newcastle Street in Fyshwick.

As well as expanding 1.5km of road, Stanhope says the project will erect new bridges over Canberra Avenue and the rail line.

“Once completed in mid 2012, the benefits of this new piece road infrastructure will be shared by the users of the airport as well as the tens of thousands of people who commute daily through the precinct between Queanbeyan and Canberra,” Stanhope says.

The Federal Government has contributed $18.5 million to the upgrade, with $1.5 million coming from the Stanhope administration.

Federal Canberra MP Gai Brodtmann says the highway, once completely duplicated, will ease congestion for the 40,000 motorists using it every day.
