Give us more grain competition, PGA tells ACCC
ACCC urged to open up Western Australia’s grain transport market to more competition
By Ruza Zivkusic | April 1, 2011The Pastoralists and Graziers Association (PGA) has written to the competition regulator imploring it to intervene to promote greater competition in Western Australia’s grain transport market.
PGA spokesman Sheldon Mumby says Grain Express needs to be removed in order to create more competition in the transport sector which would boost income for farmers.
The ACCC is currently reviewing CBH’s exclusive authority to operate Grain Express.
The association has written to the Australian Competition and Consumers Commission (ACCC) calling for more competition, saying it wants the most efficient and cheapest system for farmers to get their goods to port.
"Part of the campaign is to show the ACCC that there is broad industry support in WA for the removal of Grain Express," Mumby says.
"We feel as farmers and as an industry that Grain Express has served its purpose, the deregulation of the wheat industry has matured since it initially started in 2008 and Grain Express is no longer needed."
Mumby says more competition is needed on rail to alleviate council and community concerns over the number of trucks using the road.
"We are the largest producing state of grain and we need the most efficient and competitive system there is," he says.
