Canberra imposes double demerit points for speeding and seatbelt offences over long weekend

Double demerit points for speeding and seatbelt offences have been imposed in Canberra over the Easter long weekend to keep the holiday road toll down.
Chief Minister and Minister for Transport Jon Stanhope says double demerits will apply from April 21 to April 26 and has urged motorists to drive safely over the holiday period.
Six demerit points can be applied to the licence of any driver who does not wear a seatbelt or who permits passengers under 16 years of age to travel in a vehicle unrestrained.
If drivers exceed the speed limit this Easter period by over 15km/h and up to 30km/h, six demerit points will be applied.
Police will also slap 12 demerit points on motorists caught exceeding the speed limit by 45km/h or more.
Drivers who commit other offences, such as running red lights or failing to stop at stop signs, will receive one extra demerit point on top of the usual number applied.
Stanhope says the opportunity for motorists to travel far over the long weekend means there will be a high risk of fatigue-related crashes.
“We have seen a number of very serious vehicle accidents already on our roads this year so I ask all motorists to make sure they are well rested and vigilant over this period,” he says.
“Road safety is always important, but during these busy times we should pay extra attention to driving safely. Don’t let fatigue or reckless driving ruin the Easter holidays for yourself or others.”
