ATA announces award to recognise trucking bravery after holding a competition to name the new gong

The new gong to recognise acts of trucking bravery has been dubbed the Highway Guardian Award, following a competition to name it.
The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) announced the new award today, which will be presented along with a $5,000 cheque at this year’s Australian Trucking Convention.
Anthony Harle lodged the winning entry and will receive a set of wheels from Continental Tyres, which is sponsoring the award.
“The Highway Guardian Award, as it has now been named, will be a great opportunity for the general public and the driving industry to pay tribute to drivers who go above and beyond the call of duty on the road,” ATA Chairman David Simon says.
Nominees must be full-time drivers or operators currently working in the local, medium or long distance sector in Australia. They must have been doing their job at the time of the incident for which they have been nominated for.
“The Highway Guardian Award reflects the very best qualities of Australia’s truck drivers – the willingness to step out of the cab and save lives, whether it’s at the scene of a road accident or a natural disaster,” Continental Tyres sales manager Roy Norris says.
