Fair Work Ombudsman will descend on Peel to ensure employers are complying with their workplace obligations

February 7, 2011

The Fair Work Ombudsman will descend on the West Australian region of Peel to ensure employers are complying with their workplace obligations.

Fair Work inspectors have contacted about 50 employers in Mandurah, Harvey, Secret Harbour, Pinjarra, Baldivis and Waroona informing them of the compliance and education campaign.

The Ombudsman has given businesses information about workplace laws and has asked them to supply time and wages records for audit.

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell says employers from a range of industries have been randomly selected.

“Inspectors will check employers are paying staff their full entitlements and are complying with record-keeping and pay slip obligations,” Campbell says.

“Where we find records are not adequate or identify other non-compliance issues, we will provide information and assistance to employers and request they voluntarily rectify any problems.

“In cases where they don’t, or where we suspect deliberate underpayments or other serious breaches have occurred, we may launch a full investigation.”

While employers that refuse to rectify breaches face legal action, Campbell says the major aim of the Peel campaign is to improve awareness of workplace laws, the modern Award system and national employment standards.

“It is also important regional workers understand there is an agency they can turn to if they have workplace concerns. Complaints can be made confidentially,” Campbell says.
