Workers in the transport, postal and warehousing sector are working longer hours for less pay, according to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The figures for the June quarter show the average weekly hours worked is 34, up by 1.1 percent based on the same period last year. However, the total hourly rate of pay, excluding bonuses, dropped to 3.2 percent.

According to the ABS, the number of people employed full time is up by 0.3 percent since February. Some 59,000 people have found a job in the industry.

The figures reveal the unemployment rate has dropped to 5.2 percent in November. The number of employed people has increased overall to 11.4 million, with the rise driven by an increase in full-time employment.

There are 179,000 people employed full-time in road transport and 40,000 who work part-time. Some 188,000 of them are male and 31,000 are female, the ABS says.
