Police launch three-day crackdown on drink-driving

NSW Police declares drink drivers will "have nowhere to hide" as a three-day blitz state-wide blitz begins

November 3, 2010

Drink drivers will “have nowhere to hide”, according to NSW Police, as a three-day state-wide blitz begins targeting alcohol-impaired drivers.

The 72-hour crackdown begins on November 4 and will end on November 6, and motorists have been warned to expect an increased police presence on major roadways and back streets.

The three-day operation is an annual event. Last year police conducted 126,408 random breath tests and charged 469 people with drink driving. Another 2517 were booked for speeding, with 5087 were hit with infringement notices for traffic offences.

“We’ll be out in force to catch those motorists who endanger the lives of others by getting behind the wheel drunk,” Assistant Commissioner John Hartley says.

“Police will not only be targeting major freeways, highways and motorways but back streets as well – so if you drink and drive, there’s the very real chance you’ll be caught.”

Despite people being aware of the effect alcohol has, Hartley says police continue to catch drink drivers willing to put themselves and others at risk.

“We aim, through this high-visibility operation, to reduce the incidence of drink-driving and associated crashes,” he says.
