10k awarded to underpaid truckie

Truck driver receives more than $10,000 after being underpaid annual leave entitlements

November 22, 2010

A Queensland truck driver has received more than $10,000 after an investigation found his former employer failed to pay correct annual leave entitlements.

The Fair Work Ombudsman secured $10,600 for the Gaven truck driver after contacting the employer about the underpayments.

The money was secured following recent audits and investigations in the greater Gold Coast region.

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell says inspectors try to work with employers and educate them about complying with workplace laws.

“We have a flexible, fair approach and our preference is always to work with employers to help them voluntarily rectify any non-compliance issues we identify,” Campbell says.

The Ombudsman does not name the companies accused of underpaying staff unless legal action is launched to recoup the money.
