New lane for Gateway to bust traffic jams

A new lane will be added to Brisbane’s Gateway Motorway to ease congestion and cut travel times

October 18, 2010

A third lane will be added to Brisbane’s Gateway Motorway in a bid to reduce to traffic congestion and improve travel times for motorists.

The two lanes on the northbound section of the motorway between Sandgate Road and the Deagon Deviation will be expanded to three, with the new lane running for 2.5km.

Queensland Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace says the project will be completed in 2013.

According to the Federal Government, the section of road is used by about 65,000 vehicles a day, with numbers peaking in the afternoon.

“We’re targeting this area because during the afternoon peak hours traffic all the way back to Nudgee is affected, with the new 2.5 kilometre lane set to slash travel times and double the peak hour speeds at this spot,” Albanese says.
