September 27, 2010

Police have arrested two men who allegedly threw lemons at a petrol tanker on a NSW highway, smashing the windscreen and causing the truck to skid for 40 metres.

The incident happened late at night about 10:50pm when the 58-year-old truckie was travelling on the New England Highway at Singleton.

The driver contacted the police and officers were dispatched to patrol the area where they found three men hiding under bushes.

“It will be alleged a group of men, who were hiding in bushes on the side of the highway, threw a number of lemons at the cabin of the truck,” a police statement says.

“The lemons struck the windscreen and shattered the glass causing the driver to brake heavily and the tanker to skid for approximately 40 metres before coming to a stop.”

Police allege the men fled the scene when they were spotted. While officer managed to arrest two 18-year-old men, the third escaped.

The men were charged with throwing an object onto a road or into a vehicle and destroying or damaging public property.

They were bailed and will appear in Singleton Local Court on October 14.

Police are still trying to find the third male they believe was involved in the incident.
