Fair Work heads to NSW over workplace laws

Fair Work Ombudsman will visit 220 businesses in NSW to educate employers about their workplace obligations

September 22, 2010

Companies in NSW will soon be targeted as part of an education campaign by the Fair Work Ombudsman to ensure compliance with workplace relations laws.

From next week, the Ombudsman will visit 120 businesses along the Murray River. It plans to visit businesses at Corowa, Deniliquin, Tocumwal, Finley, Howlong, Moama and Berrigan.

The Ombudsman will visit 60 businesses in Bathurst over three weeks and 40 in Lithgow during a two week period, focusing on the commercial precincts.

Officials will randomly doorknock businesses handing out information packs outlining best practice guides, fact sheets and advice.

Fair Work Ombudsman NSW Director Mark Davidson says the informal visits are aimed at assisting employers to understand changes to national workplace laws such as employment standards and modern awards.

“We are very serious about our job of building knowledge and creating fairer workplaces and we are strongly focused on ensuring the community understands its workplace rights and obligations,” Davidson says.

“The best advice I can give to business operators is to get the basics right and everything else should start to fall into place.”

Davidson says the basics include applying the award to employees and the correct classifications and pay rates.
