Queensland Government introduces eight new cars to help escort wide loads

The Queensland Government will introduce eight new cars to escort wide loads as part of efforts to improve motorists’ visibility of the vehicles.
Police Minister Neil Roberts says the cars have been designed specifically to escort wide loads.
He says four of the cars will remain in South East Queensland and four will be sent to central and northern regions.
“The Australian-made Toyota Camrys will feature not only environmentally friendly technology and high visibility but also a forward facing message bar for the first time,” Roberts says.
“As a result, oncoming motorists will now be able to easily view instructions and information relating to how best to negotiate each unique wide load and special event convoy.”
Acting Deputy Commissioner Col McCallum says the cars are part of the new Central Permit Support Unit, which will become the lead agency for managing wide load escorts and issuing permits.
McCallum likens the unit to a “one stop shop” for the Brisbane metropolitan area and eventually the state.
