Costa Logistics has begun work on a multi-million dollar expansion of its distribution centre west of Sydney in NSW to cope with its growing business operations.

The $5 million investment will add another 4500sqm to the Eastern Creek site, which is already 14,000sqm.

The work follows the recent addition of 3500sqm to Costa’s Melbourne facility at Derrimut that now stretches across 17,000sqm. The company also leased a vacant chilled site in Brisbane in March this year in a bid to grow its market share in Queensland.

"It is an important growth phase in the company’s evolution. Brisbane was important for us because it gave us true national coverage whereas the extra space in Derrimut and Eastern Creek is to cater for the businesses growth,’’
Costa Logistics Chief Operating Officer Geoff Norman says.

The expansions are expected to create about 30 jobs, and the projects come after Costa signed a $6 million deal in March this year with Optus to streamline the company’s telecommunications services.

Costa has not hidden its desire to pursue new work, with Norman telling ATN earlier this year: "We’ve got some pretty aggressive growth plans."

Its move into Brisbane led to immediate gains, with Costa securing new contracts and warning competitors it would target the manufacturing and food production industries.

"We can offer companies in Brisbane a hi-tech, high quality service and we will be promoting that quite extensively through an aggressive marketing strategy in Queensland," Norman says.

Costa Logistics also has a 6500sqm distribution centre in Perth and a 3500 in Tasmania.

The operator is also involved in a 44000sqm facility near the Brisbane CBD and a 45000sqm centre in Melbourne under a joint venture with the Polar Fresh brand.
