NSW BUDGET ’10-11: NSW Budget commits $4.7b to roads

NSW Government will invest $4.7 billion to build and maintain critical road infrastructure across the State

The NSW Government will invest $4.7 billion to build and maintain critical road infrastructure across the State.

Minister for Roads David Borger claims it is the biggest road investment program in NSW’s history and an increase of $300 million on last year’s record budget.

“The NSW Government through this budget will have more than 6380 workers on the ground constructing new road infrastructure,” Mr Borger said.

Key features of the roads budget include:

  • $2.2 billion to build new roads
  • $1 billion for maintenance of the state’s existing roads
  • $336 million in improvements to the traffic network
  • $871 million invested on the Pacific Highway – representing almost 19 percent of the entire NSW roads budget.

“Road safety is a top priority for the NSW Government, which is why we’re pouring $234 million into road safety projects,” Borger says.

“This is in addition to the huge amount we’ll also be investing on road safety improvements while building and maintaining the State’s massive 20,000km road network.”

Major infrastructure projects due for completion in the coming year includes:

  • $46 million to complete construction of the Inner West Busway along Victoria Road, including a new bridge over Iron Cove
  • $24 million to complete construction, funded by the Federal Government, of the Alstonville bypass on the Bruxner Highway
  • $22 million to complete construction of the final stage of the upgrade of Hoxton Park Road to four lanes
  • $22 million to complete construction of the upgrade of Camden Valley Way to four lanes between Bernera Road and Cowpasture Road
  • $20 million to complete construction of the widening to four lanes of the northern approach to Alfords Point bridge including a new bridge over Henry Lawson Drive
  • $12.5 million to complete construction of stage 2 of the Bangor Bypass, providing four lanes between Marsden Road and New Illawarra Road
  • $12 million to complete construction of the third crossing of the Hunter River at Maitland
  • $12 million to complete construction of the Central Coast Highway and Woy Woy Road intersection upgrade at Kariong
  • $12 million to complete construction of the widening of Avoca Drive to four lanes between Sun Valley Road and Bayside Drive at Green Point
  • $10 million to complete construction of the final stage of the four lane upgrade of Cowpasture Road
  • $6.7 million jointly funded with the Federal Government to complete improvements to the Kings Highway between Queanbeyan and Bungendore.

Additionally, $827 million will be invested in the Pacific Highway upgrade between Hexham and the Queensland border, including:

  • $174 million to continue construction, jointly funded with the Federal Government, on the dual carriageway bypass of Kempsey ($135 million) and the Glenugie upgrade ($39 million)
  • $317.5 million to continue construction, jointly funded with the Federal Government, on dual carriageways on the Ballina bypass ($115 million), at Bulahdelah ($92.5 million) and at Banora Point ($110 million)
  • $155 million to start major construction, jointly funded with the Federal Government, between Coffs Harbour (Sapphire) and Woolgoolga
  • $85 million to continue planning and preconstruction activities, jointly funded with the Federal Government, for the upgrade of the highway between Tintenbar and Ewingsdale, north of Ballina.

And $345 million has been committed to continue duplication of the final sections of two-lane Hume Highway between Sydney and Melbourne, including:

  • $146 million to continue construction, funded by the Federal Government, of the divided highway bypass of Tarcutta
  • $133 million to continue construction, funded by the Federal Government, of the divided highway bypass of Woomargama
  • $66 million to start construction, jointly funded with the Federal Government, of the divided highway bypass of Holbrook.

Other key projects funded through the Budget include:

  • The $174 million program of work for the Great Western Highway
  • The $62 million program of work for the Princes Highway
  • $340 million to continue construction, jointly funded with the Federal Government, of the Hunter Expressway between the F3 at Seahampton and the New England Highway at Branxton
  • $42 million to continue construction, jointly funded with the Federal Government, of the F5 Freeway widening between Ingleburn and Campbelltown
  • $40 million to continue construction of the Oxley Highway upgrade to four lanes between Wrights Road and the Pacific Highway at Port Macquarie
  • $35 million to continue construction of the four lane widening of the Central Coast Highway between Carlton Road and Matcham Road at Erina Heights
  • $28 million to continue planning and preconstruction activities for the upgrade of Camden Valley Way to four lanes between Cowpasture Road and Cobbitty Road
  • $20 million to start construction of the four lane upgrade of Camden Valley Way between Cobbitty Road and Narellan Road
  • $18 million funded by the Federal Government to start construction of the realignment of the Barton Highway at Gounyan curves
  • $12 million to start construction of the four lane widening of the Central Coast Highway between Matcham Road, Erina Heights and Ocean View Drive, Wamberal
  • $10 million for planning and preconstruction of a new bridge over the railway line at Thornton
  • $10 million to complete planning and preconstruction activities and call tenders for construction of the Newcastle inner bypass between Shortland and Sandgate
  • $10 million to complete planning and preconstruction for the Erskine Park Link Road to service the Western Sydney Employment Area
  • $10 million for planning and preconstruction for the upgrade of the Central Coast Highway at the intersection of Brisbane Water Drive and Manns Road at West Gosford
  • $6 million to continue planning and construction of improvements to Terrigal Drive
  • $5 million to continue planning for the future expansion of the M5 East Motorway between King Georges Road and Sydney airport
  • $2.6 million funded by the Federal Government to continue construction of the Moree bypass on the Newell Highway.
