June 1, 2010

Former Asciano Group Chief Operating Officer Don Telford has been elected the new chairman of the Australian Logistics Council (ALC).

Telford, who replaces long-serving chair Ivan Backman, is joined on the board of the peak national body for Australia’s freight T&L industry by a number of new directors.

The ALC board now comprises:

  • Ian Murray, Deputy Chairman and Executive Director, Australian Institute of Export
  • Helen Newell, Director Corporate Development and Government Relations, Asciano
  • Ingilby Dickson, General Manager Supply Chain and Logistics, BlueScope Steel
  • Tania Whyte, President Commercial, Linfox Australia
  • Dom Figliomeni, CEO, Port Kembla Port Corporation
  • Stephen Cleary, Group General Manager – Freight, Qantas Airways
  • Michael Carter, Executive General Manager, QR Network, QR
  • Andrew Ethell, General Manager Group Corporate Affairs, Toll Group
  • Daryll Hull, Managing Director, Transport and Logistics Centre
  • Tony Sheldon, Federal Secretary, Transport Workers Union
  • John Begley, Chairman, Victorian Freight and Logistics Council
  • Michael Haines, CEO, Westgate Ports
  • Paul Larsen, CEO, WestNet Rail.

Backman, who presided over the AGM in his final official function as chairman of ALC, a role he has held since 2003, says the Council has changed much over this time and is set to change again going forward.

“2009/2010 has been a period of considerable change for the Australian Logistics Council, with a move to Canberra, new strategic plan and policy focus, and reliant on a fully member funded structure,” he says.

“One thing was clear seven years ago and remains clear today: there is a need for an organisation which offers a united view on behalf of the Australian freight transport and logistics supply chain.

“ALC is now established as Australia’s peak national freight T&L body, and is a genuine industry voice – increasingly providing credible advice and influence to government decision making in our vital T&L sector.”

Backman and retiring director David Williams were made Honorary Fellows of ALC at the AGM in recognition of their contribution.
