Truck rollover and fatal crash close Qld highways

A fatal crash and a truck rollover caused significant delays on Queensland highways on the weekend

May 3, 2010

Two Queensland highways were closed for hours on end during the weekend after incidents involving heavy vehicles.

The Bruce Highway north of the Sunshine Coast suffered delays of about three hours after a 19-year-old man died when his car was struck by a B-double before 2pm yesterday.

“Initial investigations suggest that the car turned right out of a service station to head south along the highway when a northbound truck has collided with the car,” a police statement says.

The 34-year-old truck driver was treated for shock, while police set up traffic diversions.

The incident followed a truck rollover about 2:30am Saturday on the Captain Cook Highway near Port Douglas.

The vehicle’s load spilled onto the road, forcing emergency crews to close it until 3:30pm.

The driver was taken to hospital with a fractured leg.

Police issued warnings to motorists against travelling between Cairns and Port Douglas because there were no detours put in place.

Investigations are continuing into both incidents.
