A truck driver tried in vain to avoid crashing into a car after it pulled out in front of him on the Flinders Highway last night.

The truck braked heavily to avoid the car but ploughed into its right side, killing a 15-year-old girl.

Police received reports about the incident around 10:50pm, which occurred south-east of Townsville in North Queensland near Stuart.

“It appears from initial inquires that the car pulled onto the highway in front of the west bound truck,” a police statement says

The 17-year-old female driver of the car and the 20-year-old front seat passenger suffered minor injuries.
