May 19, 2010

Work will soon begin on the next section of a $2.25 billion Ring Road upgrade in Victoria after the contract for the project was awarded today.

BMD Constructions successfully tendered for the $31.8 million project to improve the Furlong Road and Sunshine Avenue at St Albans section of the Ring Road upgrade.

Work is due to begin in the middle of the year and be completed in 2013. The project is funded by the Victorian and federal governments.

Victorian Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas says an extra lane will be constructed each way between Furlong Road and Sunshine Avenue. The freeway bridge on the route will also be widened.

He says the upgrades will benefit industry in Melbourne’s west by making it easier for businesses to move freight to and from destinations such as ports and airports.

Once complete, Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony says the upgrade will improve safety and reduce congestion and travel times.
