Albanese announces funding for rail crossings

Funding announced for 13 high risk level crossings in Tasmania to improve road safety

May 17, 2010

Thirteen high risk rail level crossings in Tasmania will be upgraded as part of a multi-million dollar effort to improve road safety.

The Rudd Government will invest $3.96 million into upgrading the crossings.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese says it is part of a national push to lower incident rates at rail crossing junctures following 100 accidents nationally.

“Crashes at level crossings affect not only drivers and passengers, but also take a serious toll on train drivers, the efficiency of our rail networks, and the broader community,” Albanese says.

Initially, two rail level crossings in Tasmania will be upgraded at a cost of $710,000, one on Lillico Road in Lillico and another near Evandale.

New flashing crossing-warning lights will be added to existing signs.

The upgrades will be delivered with funding coming from the Rudd Government’s economic stimulus plan.

“All up, we are providing $3.96 million to upgrade safety around 13 high risk rail level crossings in Tasmania,” Albanese says.

The money stems from the $150 million the Boom Gates for Rail Crossings Program.

Albanese says the program will upgrade more than 290 level crossings.
