March 4, 2010

A young truck driver is in hospital suffering shock after desperately trying to evade a fatal collision with car in northern Queensland last night.

Police say the 36-year-old B-double driver was travelling south on the Bruce Highway at Marlborough about 6pm when a car turned onto the highway in front of the heavy vehicle.

“The driver of the truck tried to take evasive action at the same time as the sedan made a right hand turn into a service road and the vehicles collided,” a police statement says.

The car driver, believed to be in his 60s, died at the scene and has not yet been identified. A female passenger believed to be in her 80s was taken to hospital with multiple non life threatening injuries.

Police say the truck driver also suffered multiple non life threatening injuries.

According to Queensland’s latest road toll statistics up to February 28, fatal crashes and fatalities have dropped based on the same time last year.

Total fatal crashes are currently 32, down from 46. Total fatalities are 35, down from 53.
